About Debra Ravasia

Debra Ravasia, MD, is an obstetrician/gynecologist who developed an additional interest in obesity and metabolic medicine after discovering the strong connection between a variety of women’s health problems, and insulin/glucose metabolism.   Within obstetrics and gynecology, she has further areas of interest in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, aesthetic medicine, and in international women’s health.

Dr. Ravasia completed her undergraduate medical training at the College of Medicine in the University of Saskatchewan in 1994, then completed her residency at the Foothills Hospital, University of Calgary.  She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.  She is also board certified with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and subspecialty board certified with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology  as a Fellow of Pelvic Floor Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.  She began her private practice in 2000 as an obstetrician/gynecologist in North Dakota, where she was also Clinical Associate Professor with the University of North Dakota Faculty of Medicine and involved in teaching medical students and residents.  In 2005, she moved with her family to Spokane, WA.  On arriving in Spokane, she founded a practice consisting of primary care for women, obstetric and gynecologic care and urogynecology, which evolved into a multispecialty practice with several other providers.  She set up an ambulatory surgical facility as part of this practice, and had the pleasure of working with several brilliant and dedicated physicians, nurse practitioners and other great staff in that practice.  She completed further training in aesthetic medicine and became a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, and founded an aesthetic clinic in addition to her obstetrics and gynecology practice. Dr.  Debra Ravasia is also certified with the American College of Sports Medicine as a personal trainer.

As her interest in obesity medicine grew and she realized that chronic diseases could not only be controlled, but reversed with good metabolic management, she went on to become Board Certified with the American Board of Obesity Medicine.  With the input of other physicians, registered dietitians, and personal trainers, she helped develop several metabolic protocols for her patients to help them control their metabolic problems, including obesity.  She became a certified clinical densitometrist as she began to realize the power of the densitometer in properly diagnosing and managing obesity and other aspects of metabolic syndrome.

While helping nearly 1800 patients manage and overcome their obesity and metabolic problems, Dr. Ravasia heard over and over again, “Can you do this for my husband?”  In response, Dr. Ravasia approached her good friend Dr. Brian Sabowitz, to help her out, and worked with the other providers in the clinic to establish “Metabolic Health Connection” as a philosophy and protocol to help both men and women manage metabolic problems and obesity.

Dr. Ravasia remains active with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Urogynecologic Society.  She is also an active member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (also known as the “Obesity Medicine Association”).  She co-authored the American Society of Bariatric Physicians Obesity Treatment Algorithm, which sets standards for managing obesity and metabolic protocols.  She has sat on the Medical School Curriculum Task Force of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP), now the Obesity Medical Association (OMA) and has been a speaker at the national ASBP meetings, and at for the ASBP Master’s Program in Obesity Medicine.  She is an active member of the International Society of Clinical Densitometrists, and has served on the CCD Exam Writing Committee of ISCD.  She has also served on the standard setting / exam writing committee of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.  She is a site inspector for the American Association of Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities.  She has completed training as a personal fitness trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine and worked this knowledge into various protocols for treating obesity and related comorbid conditions and intensive behavioral modification.  She is a member of the American Congress of Obstetricians/Gynecologist, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, as well as the Obesity Society (TOS) formerly known as the “North American Association for the Study of Obesity”.

Dr. Ravasia has an interest in global women’s health and recently spent time doing humanitarian work as an obstetrician/gynecologist consultant in Afghanistan for Doctors without Borders at one of their maternity projects.   She has also worked with the Canadian International Development Agency on maternal health projects in Cameroun.

At home, Dr. Debra Ravasia, and her husband, Dr. Saj Ravasia, have been married since 1995 and have 4 wonderful children.  Dr. Ravasia enjoys both downhill and skate skiing, and has recently discovered backcountry skiing (“touring”) in the Canadian Kootenays and completed avalanche training.  She also loves getting involved in her kids’ activities, hiking, reading and travelling.
